On Wednesday, 05 September 2018 at approximately 1:00 PM, Lt Col Michael Speakmon was traveling North on Highway 17 Bypass just south of Highway 544. 2nd Lt Matthew Lawton was taking the on ramp from Highway 544 on to Highway 17 Bypass North. Both members witnessed a Cessna 182 Skylane flying at an altitude of approximately 200 feet. Lt Col Speakmon and 2nd Lt Lawton immediately recognized that the pilot of the Cessna 182 was preparing to make an emergency landing onto Highway 17 Bypass North, approximately 8 1/2 miles south of Myrtle Beach International Airport. Once the pilot safely landed the plane and got it off the roadway, Lt Col Speakmon and 2nd Lt Lawton immediately ran over to the plane to make sure the pilot was alright. The Pilot, who appeared to be in his late 30's informed both members that he had lost power to the plane, but was otherwise alright.

At approximately 1:05 PM, South Carolina Highway Patrol, Horry County Fire and Rescue and Horry County Department of Airports arrived on scene and took over. Both members remained on scene until approximately 2:00 PM. The incident was handed over to Horry County Department of Airports.

Both members were interviewed by WBTW News 13 and commended the pilot on remaining calm while landing on what is usually a very busy highway.
